7 tips for preventing problems:
- Try to stick to mainstream websites and use your common sense. Going to the gambling website on the 40th page of Google because it says "Free $200 for the first 1000 users" is likely to end in $200 of computer repair fees for you.
- As Internet Explorer is still the most used browser in the world, it is the most targeted as well. Use a free alternative like Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome and Safari.
- Don't ever install anything on your computer, unless it is from a trusted source. When in question, Google it first, install later.
- Keep your OS up to date, which includes setting up auto updates from Windows.
- Get one of your techy friends to help you change your DNS server to use openDNS (www.opendns.com) instead of your ISPs own offering. OpenDNS actively fights drive by malware attacks and will show known malicias sites as simply not found.
- Have a firewall installed. Some good free ones are Outpost Firewall Free, Comodo Internet Security, or Online Armor Free.
- Have up to date anti-virus programs running. Some good free ones are Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira AntiVir Personal Edition, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition.
